Grant Gustin Reflects on Unexpected Challenges in The Flash Series Finale

In May 2023, Grant Gustin's 9-year run as The Flash came to an end with the series finale of The CW's hit superhero show. Nearly two and a half years later, Gustin has opened up about the unexpected challenges he faced during the filming of the final episode.

Gustin explained that the original plans for the episode had to be changed after he fell ill, forcing the production to rework the script. This was especially difficult, as the finale was inspired by shows like The Office and Lost, and the illness disrupted the flow of the episode.

One of the biggest changes was the inability to have Gustin reprise his second biggest character on the series, Savitar. The armored villain was set to appear in the finale, but with Gustin's illness, the crew had to forgo showing the character unmasked and applying the "pizza face" makeup.

Despite these setbacks, Gustin found a silver lining in the final scene he shot for the series. This was also the show's last scene, featuring Barry Allen running through the streets of Central City. Gustin was touched by this emotional moment, which saw Barry unleash a lightning bolt to share his speed with three new speedsters, Avery Ho, Max Mercury, and Jess Chambers.

While the series finale may not have been the sendoff Gustin had envisioned, he was able to find a sense of closure and appreciation for his time as the Scarlet Speedster.
