20 Mar
Summary
- Ryan Gosling suggested Sandra Hüller sing in a pivotal scene.
- Hüller's karaoke performance was inspired by her singing off-set.
- The directors initially found asking Hüller to sing last-minute 'messed up'.

A pivotal emotional scene in the science fiction epic 'Project Hail Mary' was an unrehearsed addition, conceived by star Ryan Gosling. He was inspired to ask co-star Sandra Hüller to sing after overhearing her vocalizing between takes.
Hüller, portraying the pragmatic leader Eva Stratt, agreed to the impromptu karaoke performance under the condition that she could choose the song. She selected a Harry Styles track, which her daughter approved as 'cool,' and secured the rights the day before shooting.
Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller acknowledged the challenge of such a last-minute request to an actor of Hüller's caliber. They recognized, however, that the scene offered a unique way to showcase Stratt's need for professional distance while revealing empathy for her crew.
Gosling, known for his own musical background, did not sing in the scene. Filmmakers chose to keep the focus on Hüller's character, aiming to emphasize Grace's eventual connection with his alien counterpart, Rocky.
