Goodnight Sweetheart, the popular BBC sitcom featuring Nicholas Lyndhurst as an accidental time traveler, is reportedly set for a potential return more than a decade after its last appearance. The series, which originally ran from 1993 to 1999, focused on Gary Sparrow's double life between 1990s London and 1940s wartime London.
In 2016, a one-off special titled Many Happy Returns aired, drawing nearly five million viewers. Co-writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran have indicated a willingness to produce another special to conclude the story, provided the BBC or another broadcaster makes a suitable offer and the original cast is available. They have already developed material for this special, which has also been written into a novel.
The novel, Goodnight Sweetheart: Many Happy Returns, is scheduled for release in May 2026 and explores events leading up to the 2016 special, which was set in 1962. This ties into Gary's past interactions with his wartime sweetheart, Phoebe, and a mention of Marilyn Monroe.
Nicholas Lyndhurst, widely recognized for his role as Rodney Trotter in Only Fools and Horses, starred in the original run. Meanwhile, actress Gwyneth Strong, who played Cassandra Trotter, recently indicated she is working on a new TV show proposal with former co-star Tessa Peake-Jones, hinting at potential reunions for other beloved actors.
