Golden Hare Fetches £82,550 at Auction

An 18-carat gold hare, a significant artifact from a famous treasure hunt, recently sold at auction for a hammer price of £82,550. Artist Kit Williams originally buried the jewel, named Jack, in 1979 in Ampthill Park, Bedfordshire, with only one witness present. The hare's journey became a global phenomenon after the release of 'Masquerade,' a book containing cryptic clues to its location.

The book, which fueled worldwide treasure-hunting expeditions, sold out rapidly. The golden hare was eventually discovered in 1982 by Dugald Thompson. This discovery led to controversy when a newspaper revealed a connection between Thompson and Williams' former girlfriend, adding intrigue to the already sensational hunt.

Jack Hare, adorned with a ruby eye and turquoise-set flowhead motifs, has a history of significant sales. It was previously auctioned in 1988 for £31,900 and has remained with the same family since. The artist expressed his keen interest in the hare's future journey, noting the current owners' role in its public exhibition.
