The beloved 1989 SEGA arcade game, Golden Axe, is being reborn as a meta-comedy animated series. Creators Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler are bringing the world of Yuria and its iconic villains to life with a modern, humorous twist. The series features a star-studded voice cast, including Matthew Rhys as the grumpy dwarf Gilius Thunderhead, Liam McIntyre as the honorable Ax Battler, and Lisa Gilroy as the witty sorceress Tyris Flare. These three warriors are tasked with defeating the persistent villain Death Adder.
The plot follows the reunion of Gilius, Ax, and Tyris as they confront Death Adder, who seems unable to stay defeated. Their quest is complicated by the arrival of Hampton Squib, voiced by Danny Pudi, an eager but unprepared adventurer. This animated adaptation, which has been in development since 2014, is set to premiere exclusively on Paramount+ on Wednesday, September 16. The series promises to bring familiar elements like sword-wielding skeletons and the Chicken Legs creatures to the screen with a comedic lens.
