GOG Revives PC Game Big Boxes Digitally
9 Sep
Summary
- GOG now offers downloadable 3D models and printable scans of old PC game boxes.
- The feature is currently limited to five specific classic PC games on the platform.
- This initiative aims to preserve the physical packaging of digital games.
PC gaming platform GOG is reigniting nostalgia for the "big box" era of game packaging by offering downloadable 3D models and printable scans. This new feature allows players to recreate the physical presence of classic PC games, which were once prized shelf collectibles. Currently, the "Printable Big Box" collection includes five titles: Armikrog, Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, Myst, and Star Trek: 25th Anniversary.
Each download provides an animated 3D object file and printable templates, enabling a papercraft project for enthusiasts. GOG states this initiative is part of its preservation mission, extending to the physical objects that housed games. The program is a collaboration with Benjamin Wimmer's Big Box Collection website, which hosts over 1,000 3D scans of PC game packaging.
This move by GOG occurs amidst a broader industry trend towards digital-only game releases and the decline of physical media. GOG emphasizes its commitment to DRM-free installers, ensuring players retain ownership and control over their purchased games, a stark contrast to the changing landscape of console game distribution.
