Summary
- The original God of War trilogy is being remade.
- A new God of War retro-style game is available now.
- Remakes are in early development, release date unknown.

To celebrate 20 years of the God of War franchise, Sony's Santa Monica Studio has revealed plans for two new projects. The most significant announcement is the remake of the original God of War trilogy, which originally released on the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. These beloved classics are being reimagined for contemporary gaming platforms. Development for these remakes is in its very early stages, with no release date or visual previews yet available. This move follows the success of the recent Norse-themed God of War games and an upcoming Amazon series. The original games, God of War and God of War II, launched in 2005 and 2007 for the PS2, followed by God of War III in 2010 for the PS3. The latter also received a PS4 remaster. While lauded as classics, the earlier titles show their age, and the remake aims to smooth out rough gameplay elements.
In addition to the upcoming remakes, a new God of War-inspired game, 'God of War Sons of Sparta,' is available now. Developed by Mega Cat Studios, known for its retro game expertise, this title embraces classic 2D action-platformer aesthetics. 'Sons of Sparta' is canon and delves into Kratos' youth as he trains with his brother. Despite its distinct visual style, the combat and creature designs evoke the spirit of the God of War series. Priced at $30, it offers fans a new, albeit different, way to engage with the franchise's lore while awaiting the more substantial trilogy remakes.
