Kratos Recast: Bautista Takes On God of War Role

Development continues on Prime Video's God of War television adaptation. The series, first eyed in March 2022, saw significant casting changes in January 2026. Dave Bautista has officially signed on to portray Kratos, the titular character, after Ryan Hurst, who was initially cast, sustained a serious injury in June. Production began in late 2025 with plans to film two seasons back-to-back.

The expansive cast includes Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, and Callum Vinson as Atreus. Alastair Duncan reprises his role as Mimir, while Jeff Gulka and Danny Woodburn play the brothers Sindri and Brok. Sonya Walger is cast as Freya, with Louis Cunningham, Ben Chapple, Evelyn Miller, and Island Austin in recurring roles.

The series will follow Kratos and his ten-year-old son Atreus on a quest to scatter the ashes of Faye, their late wife and mother. This journey will explore Kratos's attempts to mentor his son in becoming a better god, while Atreus guides his father toward humanity. The adaptation received a two-season order in December 2022, with Emmy-winning director E.O. Toye joining the creative team on December 1, 2025.

Ronald D. Moore is serving as showrunner, taking over from the initial team of Rafe Judkins, Hawk Ostby, and Mark Fergus, who departed in October 2024 after completing scripts for the first season. The series is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
