Goan Lavani: A Hymn to History
8 Mar
Summary
- Goan lavani features musical hymns, unlike its Maharashtrian counterpart.
- Performers sing ancient devotional songs during the Shigmo festival.
- These songs narrate tales of valor and mythological stories.

In Goa, the traditional dance form known as lavani takes a distinct form during the Shigmo festival. Unlike the Maharashtrian lavani, which often features female percussionists, the Goan version revolves around singing hymns accompanied by instruments like the Pakhawaj and Kasale. These musical performances are rooted in devotional songs composed centuries ago by Gondaji Naik.
These ancient hymns not only praise the presiding deity, Bhumka Vithal, but also narrate the heroic deeds of Rane warriors who established rule in the Sattari region. The repertoire also includes stories from mythology and epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, emphasizing moral values. The tradition is kept alive by families who have performed it for generations, receiving offerings of coconut and rice as Tali.
