Tokyo Film Fest Shines with Diverse Global Talent

The 38th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) opened on a high note on October 25, 2025, with a dazzling array of stars from Asia and around the world gracing the red carpet at the Takarazuka Theater. Among the attendees were French actress Juliette Binoche, who is presenting her directorial debut "In-I in Motion," and Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing, the lead in the competition film "Mother Bhumi."

Japanese cinema icon Yoshinaga Sayuri was honored with the TIFF Lifetime Achievement Award for her illustrious career. Wearing a kimono depicting pioneering female mountaineer Tabei Junko, whom she portrays in the festival's opening film "Climbing for Life," Yoshinaga received a warm welcome from the audience.

Another highlight was the long-awaited premiere of Paul Schrader's 1985 biopic "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters," which had been effectively banned in Japan since its initial release. Schrader quipped on the red carpet, "Don't blame America for Donald Trump!" as the film's controversial depiction of the legendary Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima had previously prevented it from screening at the first TIFF in 1985.
