A comprehensive Nighttime Culture Index, developed by ADE and VibeLab, has assessed nightlife across six major global cities. The report reveals significant financial inequalities, with nightclub entry prices varying drastically. In Sydney, it costs an hour of minimum wage, while in São Paulo it's nine hours, and in Lagos, a staggering 25 hours. This disparity significantly impacts accessibility for both promoters and audiences.
Furthermore, the index highlights persistent gender inequality, with female and gender-diverse artists representing only 27% to 32% of artists featured in lineups. Venue ownership and leadership diversity were also rated poorly by experts. Safety concerns are prevalent, particularly around nightlife areas, with a notable difference between feeling safe inside venues versus on surrounding streets.
New York's nightlife challenges include high costs for promoters and audiences, though its scene is praised for immense diversity. Block parties and outdoor events are highly valued, but concerns about overpolicing, particularly for marginalized groups, exist. The city scored moderately on sustainability commitments and public funding but showed potential in educational pathways for nightlife careers.
