Glen Powell is attached to star as legendary New York Yankee Lou Gehrig in a new biopic directed by Richard Linklater. The film is set to be released by Universal Pictures.
Simon Rich is penning the screenplay for the project. Lorne Michaels, an avid Yankees fan, is producing alongside Erin David under Broadway Video's first-look deal with Universal. Powell and Dan Cohen will also produce, as will Linklater.
This collaboration marks the fifth time Powell and Linklater have joined forces. Their previous projects include "Fast Food Nation," "Everybody Wants Some!!," "Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood," and "Hit Man."
Lou Gehrig, nicknamed "The Iron Horse," played 17 seasons for the Yankees, beginning in 1923. His distinguished career was tragically ended by a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), now commonly known as Lou Gehrig disease.
His life story was previously depicted in the 1942 film "The Pride of the Yankees," starring Gary Cooper. The film earned multiple Academy Award nominations. Senior EVP Production Development Erik Baiers will oversee the film for Universal.
