A new documentary, "I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol," begins streaming on May 26, offering Glen Matlock's perspective on his time with the iconic band. Based on his 1996 memoir, the film seeks to highlight Matlock's often-overlooked role as the founding bassist and co-writer of significant Sex Pistols tracks, including "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen."
The 94-minute film features commentary from Matlock and interviews with notable musicians like Debbie Harry, Billy Idol, and Kenney Jones, alongside archival footage of John Lydon, Sid Vicious, and manager Malcolm McLaren. Matlock, who co-produced the project, describes it as a "DIY project" that aims to correct the narrative, which he feels has marginalized his contributions.
Matlock contends that his role in the band's formation and musical output, including demonstrating chord progressions for key songs, has been unfairly overshadowed. The documentary contrasts with the narrative often centered on Sid Vicious and explores the diverse political views within the band, which Matlock found contributed to internal splits.
Following his departure from the Sex Pistols, Matlock pursued other musical projects. He notes that while relationships with former bandmates Steve Jones and Paul Cook have largely improved, he was dissatisfied with a recent British TV miniseries based on Jones' memoir. The current Sex Pistols lineup, featuring new vocalist Frank Carter, is scheduled for a 50th-anniversary tour beginning June 11 in Europe, with U.S. dates commencing September 11 in Dallas.
