The acclaimed 1993 memoir "Girl, Interrupted" has been reimagined as a stage play featuring music by Aimee Mann and a book by Martyna Majok. Directed by Jo Bonney, the production is currently in previews at The Public Theater in New York City, with its official opening set for June 4. This theatrical adaptation brings Susanna Kaysen's experiences in a late 1960s psychiatric facility to life.
The play follows Susanna as she forms unexpected bonds with other young women while navigating her stay. It aims to reveal how those who witness our darkest moments can offer the most profound insights. The production captures intimate therapy sessions, tense confrontations, and moments of friendship.
Juliana Canfield stars as Susanna, the aspiring writer. King Princess makes her theatrical debut as the unpredictable Lisa, and Emily Skinner plays Dr. Wick. The cast also includes Katherine Reis as Daisy and Sally Shaw as Polly, portraying characters memorably seen in the 1999 film adaptation.
Choreography is by Sonya Tayeh. The production faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Aimee Mann's songs, originally written for the project, were released on her 2021 album. The play runs through July 12.
