Musician's Shocking Punk Rock Origin Story

Gina Schock shared an extraordinary anecdote about her early musical journey, which began in her Baltimore neighborhood. She was spontaneously invited by Edith Massey, a local figure from John Waters films, to join her punk rock band. Schock accepted, seeing it as an opportunity to leave her hometown.

Schock then embarked on national tours as the drummer for Edie and the Eggs. She recalled Massey's endearing quirks during their travels, highlighting Massey's love for attention and her habit of reading every road sign. Schock emphasized that the band's musical proficiency was secondary to Massey's enjoyment.

This touring experience proved pivotal for Schock, influencing her decision to pursue opportunities in major cities like New York, San Francisco, or Los Angeles, ultimately leading her to settle in Los Angeles. She reflected on how this formative period, directly linked to Massey, may have influenced her own future musical success, including potential involvement with bands like the Go-Go's.
