Summary
- Original pilot filmed in 1963 faced numerous production issues.
- Key cast members changed from the unaired pilot to the aired series.
- Network executives and creator Sherwood Schwartz clashed over show's tone.

The initial pilot episode of "Gilligan's Island," named "Marooned," was filmed in November 1963. Production in Hawaii was hampered by severe weather, mirroring the fictional plight of the S.S. Minnow's passengers. The filming schedule was further disrupted by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Following JFK's death, Honolulu harbor was closed for a national day of mourning, which stalled the already over-budget production. This delay coincided with the realization that the pilot episode was two minutes too short.
Creator Sherwood Schwartz and CBS executives had differing visions for the show. Schwartz envisioned a satire exploring class differences, while CBS favored a more lighthearted comedy suitable for star Bob Denver. Schwartz ultimately conceded to the network's preferences.
The cast of the original, unaired pilot also differed from the series' familiar lineup. Initially, secretaries Bunny and Ginger were included instead of Mary Ann Summers and Ginger Grant. Additionally, John Gabriel was initially cast as the Professor but was replaced by Russell Johnson due to concerns about his appearance.
