MCC Theater revealed the musical as part of its 40th Anniversary 2026-27 season. Peter Hedges, who wrote the original novel, is adapting it for the stage with a book also written by him. The music and lyrics are a collaboration between Adrian Enscoe, Christopher Sears, Sydney Shepherd, and Regina Strayhorn.
Anne Kauffman will direct the musical, which is scheduled to open at MCC's Newman Mills Theater. This adaptation aims to offer a fresh perspective on the tale of a dysfunctional family in a fictional rural town and their yearning for a life beyond their current circumstances. The production is presented in association with producers Matt Ross, Dede Harris, and Linda Rubin.
