The 2025 Gijón Film Festival (FICX) is set to open this Friday, November 14th, with a strong lineup that mixes big festival winners and Spanish world premieres. The festival will showcase Richard Linklater's Berlin Silver Bear winner "Blue Moon," starring Ethan Hawke as a troubled songwriter.
Gijón's program also includes works by other renowned auteurs, such as Radu Jude's Berlin contender "Kontinental '25" and Ira Sachs' "Peter Hujar's Day." However, the festival's competitive section is particularly noteworthy, featuring up-and-coming filmmakers who have gained recognition at major film events or just outside the A-list circuit.
The festival aims to consolidate the record-breaking ticket sales it achieved last year, which were the highest in its history. Gijón Festival director Alejandro Díaz emphasizes the festival's deep connection with local audiences, stating that "the festival deeply connects with local audiences, ticket sales prove that."
Beyond the screenings, Gijón is also focused on developing the regional industry and talent through its various programs, developed in partnership with the Asturias Paraíso Natural Film Commission. The festival's industry strand, Semilleru, will host workshops and panels focused on local art-house productions, while the FICX Semilleru Lab initiative will showcase works-in-progress from local filmmakers.
