Giffords Circus: Thrills, Danger, and a Pub on Wheels

Giffords Circus, established 26 years ago by the late Nell Gifford and her husband Toti, is preparing to launch its new production, 'Waterfield.' This year's show promises a blend of traditional circus skills and avant-garde theatrics, set in their Gloucestershire farm headquarters.

The company's commitment to handmade craftsmanship is evident, with Toti Gifford highlighting that everything is built by them. The farm, which also functions as a working farm and brewery, houses the circus's operations within a repurposed cattle shed. New developments include a winter venue and a hotel, both awaiting planning permission.

Nell Gifford, co-founder and a dedicated performer, passed away in 2019, but her legacy remains central to the company. Toti Gifford, who initially had no circus aspirations, was inspired by Nell to build the circus, transforming it from its humble beginnings with found materials and a small tent.

This year's show, 'Waterfield,' directed by Cal McCrystal, draws inspiration from 'Wind in the Willows' and features animal characters with a strong comedic narrative. Giffords Circus is known for its charm, companionship, and diverse international troupe working together. McCrystal has enhanced the show's theatricality, ensuring acts are presented in their best light.

'Waterfield' pushes boundaries with its most dangerous acts to date, including the Addis Ababa Troupe and the intense Wheel of Death. These performances, while thrilling and nerve-wracking, contribute to the circus's signature blend of magic, danger, and comfort, embodying the spirit of Giffords Circus.
