New Ghost in the Shell Anime Adapts Original Manga

A new anime adaptation by Science Saru aims to faithfully bring Masamune Shirow's entire original "Ghost in the Shell" manga to screen, a first for long-form visual media. The series, with its first season now available on Amazon Prime Video, vibrantly captures the manga's philosophical depth, humor, and character relationships. Director Mokochan, also known as Touma Kimura, discussed his vision, including a deliberate '90s aesthetic and the importance of predominantly hand-drawn animation.

The director sought to establish the dynamic between Major Kusanagi and Chief Aramaki, exploring their relationship more deeply than previous adaptations. He chose a retro technological feel, inspired by 1980s films like "Blade Runner," believing it enhances the story's timeless themes about human knowledge and the world. This approach contrasts with the immediate obsolescence of the latest technology, keeping the narrative fresh.

The show uniquely blends 2D hand-drawn animation for characters with 3D CGI for machines, using the latter for inorganic robotic functions. Characters with AI, like the Fujikoma, are hand-drawn when acting as characters. Mokochan noted the surprising prescience of the original manga's AI concepts, which remain relevant to current discussions about artificial intelligence and technology's role in human life.
