While George R. R. Martin is now synonymous with 'Game of Thrones,' his earlier career featured notable success in science fiction. During the 1970s and '80s, Martin penned numerous acclaimed sci-fi novels and short stories, garnering prestigious Hugo and Nebula Award nominations and wins.
This recognition paved the way for television writing opportunities. Martin contributed to the 1985 reboot of 'The Twilight Zone' on CBS. Following that experience, he joined another speculative fiction series for the network.
That series was the 1987 adaptation of 'Beauty and the Beast.' Contrary to its title, it was set in modern-day New York City, starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. Martin served as a producer and wrote more than a dozen episodes over its three-season run.
