Geologist, a member of Animal Collective, has released his debut solo album, 'Can I Get a Pack of Camel Lights?'. The instrumental record was inspired by a hurdy-gurdy performance from 28 years ago. Geologist reimagines the instrument, known for its peasant and beggar associations, as a tool for psychedelic expansion.
He explores the hurdy-gurdy's tonal range, mimicking guitar wails on "Tonic" and bagpipe sounds on "Not Trad." The nine-minute track "Compact Mirror/Last Names" features bandmate Avey Tare on bass, showcasing ambient-funk elements. "RV Envy" offers a jazz-funk freakout with distorted synths and hurdy-gurdy.
Despite the instrument's unique sound, its repetitive drone can become tiring over the album's 10 tracks. "Pumpkin Festival" is noted as a grating restatement. A respite arrives with "Government Job," featuring guest guitarist Merrick Weitz and drummer Emma Garau on a psychedelic groove.
