Estranged Heirs Battle Over Hackman's $80 Million Estate
9 Mar
Summary
- Gene Hackman's will excluded his three estranged children.
- The acting titan died at 95 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
- His estate is valued at an estimated $80 million.

Hollywood legend Gene Hackman, who died at 95 in February 2025, left behind an estimated $80 million fortune and a contentious will. Court documents revealed that Hackman deliberately excluded his three estranged adult children from his will, leaving his entire estate to his wife, Betsy Arakawa. Hackman and Arakawa were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home within days of each other.
Arakawa, 65, died from complications of hantavirus. Hackman, suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, passed away a week later, unable to comprehend his wife's death. They were buried in a private ceremony at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens, their graves currently unmarked.
Despite being excluded, Hackman's children have filed for 'interested party' status in the probate case. The estate has recently seen significant financial gains, including the sale of Hackman's 53-acre Santa Fe property for $6.25 million and an auction of 400 personal possessions for $3 million.
Betsy Arakawa's will also directs her assets to charity, further complicating the distribution of the estate. The probate process for both Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa remains pending as trustees continue to settle outstanding debts.
