Laura Aikman, star of Gavin & Stacey, was sworn to secrecy regarding her unexpected appearance in the show's 2024 Christmas finale. She played Smithy's ex-girlfriend, Sonia, and was revealed as his bride-to-be. Aikman intentionally kept her role hidden from her parents and the public to avoid spoiling the festive surprise for viewers.
Aikman shared that the only person she confided in was her friend Sarah Hadland. This mutual trust was established after Hadland revealed she was also keeping a major work secret, which turned out to be her participation in Strictly Come Dancing. This shared secrecy allowed them to discuss the intense confidentiality surrounding their respective projects.
Filming involved strict security protocols, even restricting actors from going out. Despite these measures, Aikman was photographed after visiting Russell Tovey on the set of a Doctor Who spin-off. Aikman also stars in the Liverpool crime drama This City is Ours, which was set to start a new series on BBC One on Sunday at 21:00 GMT.
