Andrew Garfield detailed his preparation for playing Sam Altman, the co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, describing the character as a calculating, manipulative, and potentially dangerous figure. Speaking at the New York Film Festival premiere of "Artificial Monday," Garfield expressed compassion for the real Altman while emphasizing the film's intent to scrutinize those granted autonomy and data.
The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, chronicles the lead-up to and launch of OpenAI, founded in 2015 as a nonprofit. It focuses on the growing unease of Ilya Sutskever, played by Yura Borisov, as Altman pushes forward with complex AI models, disregarding risks.
Actor Ike Barinholtz, who portrays Elon Musk, noted director Luca Guadagnino's guidance to find what Musk loves about himself rather than personal opinions. The film depicts Musk's presence during this period, a time when many viewed him as a savior.
Screenwriter Simon Rich stated he wrote the movie as a "last ditch effort to warn mankind," inspired by a highly intelligent grade school acquaintance whose later AI predictions were so terrifying they prompted thoughts of intervention.
Neon is set to release the film theatrically on December 25.
