Gabriela Lena Frank has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music for her ambitious 10-movement symphonic work, "Picaflor: A Future Myth." This significant composition, which premiered in March 2025, was commissioned and performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra.
The piece is a narrative journey inspired by Incan mythology, portraying a hummingbird's quest to rescue a future world from environmental catastrophe. Frank, who resides in California and was affected by the 2018 Camp fire, conceived the story herself.
"Picaflor," a 32-minute work, was conducted by Marin Alsop. Frank approached its creation as if it were her final orchestral offering, infusing it with her heritage and a vision of ancient Peruvian legends set in a futuristic context. The work explores themes of creation, rebellion, and transformation.
Frank, who received the award news while preparing for her Metropolitan Opera debut, expressed profound honor. The Pulitzer committee also recognized Andrew Rindfleisch and Billy Childs as finalists for the music prize.
