Brazilian Elite Unravels in New Dark Satire Film

Director Carolina Markowicz is set to commence filming for her upcoming movie, 'The Funeral,' in Brazil next week. The production will begin in São Paulo and subsequently move to the historically significant location of Fordlândia in the Amazon. Biônica Filmes is producing the film in collaboration with Portugal's O Som e a Fúria, with Sony Pictures handling Brazilian distribution.

The narrative of 'The Funeral' revolves around a wealthy Brazilian family whose carefully constructed dynamics are disrupted by the unexpected appearance of an illegitimate daughter during their patriarch's funeral. The ensemble cast includes notable actors such as Maeve Jinkings, Yara de Novaes, Camila Márdila, and Julio Andrade, with a special appearance by Cannes best actress winner Sandra Corveloni.

Markowicz's original script promises a blend of drama and dark satire, aiming to explore issues of societal privilege, intricate family relationships, and the methods the elite employ to preserve their public image. The film's script was previously recognized at the Torino Film Lab and the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

Markowicz, known for her award-winning work including 'Charcoal,' expressed that the film interrogates what happens when an unexpected heir claims a portion of an inheritance, both financial and emotional. She noted the family's situation as a contradiction, personal yet metaphorical for contemporary times, where grief is overshadowed by anger and loss.
