Fucked Up continues their ambitious Chinese calendar-themed EP series with 'Year of the Hare,' their seventh installment. Released on Converge frontman Jake Bannon's Deathwish imprint, this EP significantly diverges from the band's typical hardcore-infused sound. Instead, it embraces a more experimental and psychedelic direction, reminiscent of '90s outsider music labels.
The release includes a lengthy 21-minute title track and an eight-minute B-side, 'California Cold.' The title track is particularly experimental, featuring obvious tape edits, studio sounds, and a gradual build-up, evoking a modern-classical feel. The lyrics, penned by guitarist Mike Haliechuk, ponder the nature of time and the disorienting effects of modern technology.
While Fucked Up is known for their hardcore spirit, their studio albums often lean towards guitar pop. It's within this ongoing Zodiac series that the band truly indulges in sonic exploration. 'Year of the Hare' showcases this freewheeling creativity, incorporating instruments like saxophone and flute, and presenting hazy, compelling soundscapes.
