A compelling new documentary, YO (Love Is a Rebellious Bird), is set to have its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. The film centers on Anna Fitch's deeply personal project: meticulously recreating her friend Yo Shea's home in a one-third-scale replica over ten years. This artistic tribute honors a remarkable friendship that defied a nearly 50-year age difference.
The documentary intertwines vérité footage from Yo's last year with Anna's imaginative reenactments of Yo's eventful life. Yo, born in Switzerland in 1924, lived a life unconstrained by societal norms regarding sexuality, aging, and family. Anna's reconstruction of Yo's home serves as a magical space where their relationship and Yo's stories continue to live.
Fitch described their connection as "love-at-first-sight." Yo, who passed away before the film's premiere, was a multifaceted individual – a great-grandmother, intellectual confidante, and more. The film explores the profound impact of their intergenerational bond and the power of art to process grief and love.
The documentary will compete for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale. It is produced by Mirabel Pictures and features Oscar nominee Sara Dosa among its producers. First Hand Films is handling international sales.
