Free Music Classes Offer Joy and Prizes
14 Jul
Summary
- Inclusive choir and songwriting workshops are free for ages 14 and up.
- Attendees can win a guitar or keyboard by attending 80% of classes.
- Registration closes July 24 for summer and fall sessions.

Two new inclusive music programs will be offered this summer and fall in Bemidji. These programs, a choir and a songwriting workshop, are free and open to community members aged 14 and older, including those with and without disabilities. No prior musical experience is necessary, as the classes are designed to be welcoming and supportive environments.
The Inclusive Choir will focus on learning songs together, developing vocal skills, and preparing for a community performance. The Songwriting Workshop will guide participants in creating original lyrics and melodies, encouraging creative expression and storytelling through music. Both classes are scheduled to take place on Saturdays from August 1 through October 24 at Headwaters Music and Arts.
Lead for Inclusion, in partnership with local musician Shannon Murray, is facilitating these opportunities. Local music educator Betsy Bartholomew will lead the choir, with support from youth leaders assisting in various aspects of the project. To encourage attendance, participants who complete at least 80% of their classes will be entered into a drawing to win either a guitar or a keyboard. Registration for these unique musical experiences closes on Friday, July 24. Those interested can sign up by emailing shannon@leadforinclusion.org. This initiative is supported by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
