Eight of Freddie Mercury's most memorable costumes, charting his career from the 1970s to his final years, are set to be displayed at the V&A in London. The free exhibition, titled "Freddie Mercury | Splendid Things," will open on October 24, 2026, and run until January 17, 2027. This event commemorates what would have been the legendary Queen frontman's 80th birthday.
Developed in collaboration with Mercury's former fiancée and close friend, Mary Austin, the trail features seven of his iconic looks. Among the highlights are the monochrome ensemble from Queen's debut album cover and the "Mercury Wing" catsuit worn in the "Bohemian Rhapsody" music video. The display will also include his crown and cloak from the 1986 Magic Tour, worn during Queen's last live performance.
The exhibition explores Mercury's love for "splendid things," reflecting his personal style and his understanding of costume as a vital element of his performance art. Austin noted that Mercury's clothing was integral to the image he projected, essential for expressing his creative vision and leaving a lasting impact.
Designed by Tom Piper, known for his work on the Tower of London poppies, each of the trail's six stops will use sets, sound, and lighting to evoke different moments from Mercury's extraordinary career.
