Freddie Gibbs' new mixtape, Baby Face Killa, represents a masterful execution of the gangsta rap formula he has cultivated over several years. This release is notable for its adherence to established genre conventions, delivering perfectly crafted tracks focused on traditional themes of wealth, camaraderie, and illicit activities.
The mixtape serves as a tribute to influential figures in hip-hop history, with Freddie Gibbs channeling the styles of legends such as Tupac Shakur and Nate Dogg. Collaborations with artists like Spaceghostpurrp and Currensy, alongside production from Cookin' Soul, enhance the project's rich soundscape.
In an era where authentic gangster rap has waned in popularity compared to artists like Rick Ross, Gibbs stands out. His commitment to the genre, even as it faces potential obsolescence, is seen as a crucial act of preservation. Baby Face Killa is thus viewed not merely as a collection of songs but as a significant contribution that upholds a near-extinct subgenre.
