France has announced its shortlist of five films competing to represent the country in the best international feature film category at the upcoming Academy Awards. The selected titles include Andrey Zvyagintsev's critically acclaimed "Minotaur," which previously won the Grand Prix at Cannes, and Antonin Baudry's "The Battle of De Gaulle: The Iron Age," a historical drama focusing on Charles de Gaulle's rise.
Also making the cut are Arthur Harari's "The Unknown," Louis Clichy's animated feature "Le Corset," and Marine Atlan's "La Gradiva." "La Gradiva" recently secured the Grand Prize at Critics' Week, while "Le Corset" earned a Special Jury Prize at Cannes' Un Certain Regard and accolades at Annecy.
The French Oscar selection committee, whose members are now undisclosed, is scheduled to meet again on September 16. Producers and international sales agents for each shortlisted film will present their cases, alongside their U.S. distributors, before the final choice is made. France has a notable history in this category but has not secured an Oscar win since 1993.
