Pravin Tulpule, a retired lieutenant commander, has traded warships for oversized shoes and a red nose to become "Happy - The Medical Clown." After a distinguished 17-year naval career focused on strategy and survival, Tulpule found a profound and more challenging purpose in his sixties. His transition was deeply influenced by an encounter with a dying child who wished to meet a circus clown, highlighting the power of laughter to alleviate fear and loneliness.
Motivated by this experience, Tulpule took voluntary retirement in 2000 to dedicate himself to medical clowning, inspired by the philosophy of Patch Adams. Now affectionately called "India's Patch Adams," he has performed approximately 5,000 shows nationwide through his "Mission Happiness" initiative. His performances reach hospitals, orphanages, slums, and old-age homes, aiming to bring comfort and emotional well-being through humor and empathy.
