Former DWTS Pro Defends Carrie Ann Inaba's Judging Amid Criticism
25 Oct
Summary
- Cheryl Burke, a former DWTS pro, agrees Carrie Ann Inaba faces harsher criticism than male judges
- Inaba says audience backlash and booing shows viewers are invested in the show
- Burke aims to provide technical feedback and focus on authenticity in her own judging

In a recent interview, former Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) pro Cheryl Burke spoke out in defense of current judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who has faced criticism from viewers over her judging feedback. Burke agrees that Inaba is treated more harshly compared to the show's male judges, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough.
Inaba, 57, has been on the receiving end of what some viewers have deemed "harsh" scoring and feedback. However, the veteran judge doesn't take the backlash or audience booing to heart. In a 2023 interview, Inaba said the audience's strong reactions demonstrate their investment in the competition. "The whole point is we want people to have their opinions. The reason why people get invested in this competition is because they have an opinion, and it matters," she explained.
As for Burke, the 41-year-old former pro plans to bring a balanced approach to her own judging duties. "Yes, we're going to compliment them if they did a great job. But I think for me, I really want to get into the technical aspect of things, regardless of the theme. I'm looking for authenticity between the two people dancing with one another, authenticity to the style of dance that was assigned," she told Variety.
