Focus Features Secures Acclaimed Ian Charleson Drama "Elsinore"

Focus Features has secured the U.S. and multiple international distribution rights for the Ian Charleson biopic, "Elsinore." This acquisition follows a competitive bidding process, positioning the film as a significant addition to Focus's awards slate, with a planned fall release and festival launch.

The drama, directed by Simon Stone and written by Stephen Beresford, stars Andrew Scott, who also produces, as Ian Charleson. Charleson was renowned for his role as Eric Liddell in "Chariots of Fire." The film intimately explores the actor's final months in 1990, as he privately contended with AIDS while undertaking the demanding role of "Hamlet" at London's National Theatre.

Oscar winner Olivia Colman portrays the doctor who treated Charleson. The ensemble cast includes notable actors such as Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, and Luke Thompson, among others. The film was produced by a team including Andrea Occhipinti and Gaby Tana, with production companies like StudioCanal and LD Entertainment involved. Filming took place across the U.K. earlier this year.

"Elsinore" is anticipated to be a major awards contender, complementing Focus Features' diverse upcoming slate which includes a "Sense and Sensibility" remake and Robert Eggers' "Werwulf." The film's critical reception is expected to be strong, building on early positive buzz for Scott's performance.
