26 Mar
Summary
- A Black filmmaker's career prospects are tied to a rom-com's success.
- Studios delay projects pending the box office performance of 'You, Me & Tuscany'.
- Industry reports show a decline in hiring women for key film roles.
Award-winning filmmaker Nina Lee has made a public appeal for support for the romantic comedy "You, Me & Tuscany," highlighting its potential to influence her career trajectory. Lee revealed on X that studio executives are monitoring the film's box office results before committing to two of her own projects, one already shot and another in development.
Her plea coincides with findings from the 2025 ReFrame Report, which indicates a concerning decrease in the hiring of women for significant roles in major films. The CEO of WIF noted this trend suggests a reduced pipeline of opportunities for women and gender-diverse individuals within the industry.
"You, Me & Tuscany," starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page, centers on a woman who fakes a relationship in Italy, only to fall for her partner's cousin. Directed by Kat Coiro, the film was released by Universal Pictures on April 10. Lee's call to action garnered substantial support online, with thousands of users retweeting her message and sharing ticket purchasing information.
