Filmmaker Bhandarkar Objects to Chandni Bar Sequel's Title

In a legal dispute over the title, acclaimed filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar has raised objections to the use of "Chandni Bar Returns" by the producers of an upcoming sequel. Bhandarkar, who directed the original 2001 film "Chandni Bar" starring Tabu, has filed a complaint with the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA), claiming the title belongs to him.

However, the producers of the sequel, Sandeep Singh's Legend Studios, have issued a statement countering Bhandarkar's claims. They assert that they have acquired the option rights to the title from the original producers of "Chandni Bar," represented by the late R. Mohan's wife, Lata Mohan Iyer, who is listed as the proprietor in the Trademark Registry.

The studio has shared the official trademark certificate to substantiate their legal ownership of the title. They maintain that they are committed to honoring the legacy of the 2001 classic while presenting a modern, gritty narrative for contemporary audiences with the "reimagined sequel" slated for a worldwide release on December 3, 2026.

Despite Bhandarkar's objection, the producers are moving forward with the project, directed by Ajay Bahl. They are confident that their legal rights to the title are secure, and they are taking necessary steps to protect their intellectual property.
