A major industry-wide initiative has been launched by the Film & TV Charity, introducing nine Principles for Mentally Healthy Productions. This significant effort, developed over the past year with industry leaders such as the BBC, Channel 4, and Netflix, is considered the most substantial move to address mental health in film and television in a generation. The principles were unveiled at an event held at Channel 4's Horseferry Road HQ.
The guidance focuses on critical areas including managing the impact of contributors, cast, and presenters, handling difficult subject matter, and optimizing workloads to protect worker wellbeing. It also addresses leadership, company culture, working patterns, and team structures. These principles provide actionable steps for producers and leadership roles to mitigate risks to mental health on productions of any scale.
Several prominent companies, including Channel 4, Disney, Banijay, and Sky, are set to pilot these new principles on their upcoming productions. The charity highlighted that poor mental health has long been a pervasive issue in the film and TV sector, exacerbated by the current economic downturn. Marcus Ryder, head of the charity, described the initiative as potentially game-changing, emphasizing the collective determination to overcome these challenges.
