These honors acknowledge researchers, designers, and developers whose work has significantly impacted the industry over years, distinct from the awards for specific film achievements.
This year's recipients are recognized for crucial developments including safe, lead-free pyrotechnic devices that enhance on-screen action, and sophisticated layered material systems used in rendering for photorealism, such as Wētā FX's Manuka renderer and Framestore's system. Tools for stylized animation, advanced audio restoration software like dxRevive Pro, and innovative metadata matching systems are also among the honorees.
Further recognized are contributions to precise audio assembly with toolkits like Kraken Dialogue Editors, and systems like Matchbox for efficient audio and video matching in post-production. Pioneering work in high dynamic range, image-based lighting techniques is also being celebrated. The Scientific and Engineering Award will be presented for the Dragonframe software suite, a transformative tool for stop-motion animation.
