Filmmaker Explains Unintentional Movie Release Overlap
14 Aug
Summary
- Emraan Hashmi's injury caused a significant delay in the film's shoot.
- Multiple film release dates shifted due to global events and other factors.
- Distributors assured that both films could succeed during the holiday period.

The release date overlap between 'Awarapan 2' and 'Batwara 1947' was not a planned clash, according to filmmaker Vishesh Bhatt. He explained that 'Awarapan 2' was initially slated for an earlier April release. However, a shooting delay caused by Emraan Hashmi's injury in December necessitated a schedule revision.
The global event landscape and other film releases led to widespread date shifts. Bhatt's team sought a suitable new date, eventually announcing its release after observing the dynamic theatrical market. Distributors informed them of 'Batwara 1947's' release on the same date.
Despite the apparent conflict, distributors and cinema owners believed both films could perform well. They cited the holiday period and the distinct nature of the films as factors that would allow them to coexist, drawing parallels to the successful joint release of 'Gadar' and 'Lagaan' in the early 2000s.
Bhatt admitted his pause before agreeing to the date stemmed from his past experience with the original 'Awarapan.' He recalled the intense efforts needed to ensure the first film garnered attention, even involving Emraan Hashmi dancing at an awards show. This past trauma made him apprehensive about 'Awarapan 2' being overlooked.
He was repeatedly reassured by industry professionals that the market had ample capacity for multiple releases. Distributors and cinema owners found the chosen date opportune, leading Bhatt to proceed with the release plan. 'Awarapan 2,' a sequel to the 2007 film, arrived in cinemas coinciding with the Independence Day holiday period.
