- Producer Venu Kunnappilly had previously advised against the project.

Producer Murali Kunnumpurath, known for the film 'Vellam' inspired by his life, has recently shared an emotional plea regarding severe financial difficulties. These struggles are largely attributed to his latest venture, the horror film 'Sumathi Valavu'. Producer Venu Kunnappilly revealed that the project's total expenses escalated to nearly ₹20 crore.
Venu Kunnappilly had previously advised Murali against proceeding with 'Sumathi Valavu,' citing narrative weaknesses that he felt were more suited for a television serial than a feature film. Despite these warnings, Murali moved forward with the project, influenced by external advice.
The film's production costs significantly exceeded initial estimates, rising from an intended ₹5-6 crore to approximately ₹15 crore. Following its release, facilitated by Gokulam Movies, the combined production and distribution expenses are reported to have reached close to ₹20 crore. Murali himself stated his personal loss exceeded ₹7 crore, expressing despair over the financial fallout.
Kunnappilly also highlighted broader issues within the film industry, noting that many producers face financial collapse and suicidal thoughts due to mismanagement and a lack of sincerity from some professionals. He urged for greater accountability and for industry leaders to address these persistent problems.
