Summary

- Circus also funds scholarships for free performing arts education.
- It blends traditional Fijian arts with contemporary dance and circus.
The Fijian Flying Circus delivers a lo-fi, high-energy performance where cast members are responsible for all facets of the production. This includes not only dazzling acrobatics, juggling, and aerial silks but also the setup of the big top, stage, and seating. Founded 19 years ago in Suva, the Vou dance company's initiative, launched internationally in 2024 after touring Fiji, Tahiti, New Caledonia, and New Zealand, now includes stops in Australia.
The circus showcases a unique blend of traditional Fijian elements and contemporary dance, inspired by a desire to reflect modern Fijian identity. Vou also provides Fiji's only accredited tertiary performing arts training, a two-year diploma covering dance, theatre, circus, and music. The show's energetic young graduates exhibit a range of talents, from singing to traditional circus acts, sometimes in traditional Fijian costumes.
Crucially, all proceeds beyond performer salaries are channeled into Vou's scholarship program. This initiative offers free tuition, accommodation, and stipends to 12-14 students annually from Fiji. Graduates are guaranteed paid employment with Vou, providing a vital pathway to success in a country facing narrow opportunities and societal challenges like HIV and drug addiction.
