Iranian auteur Asghar Farhadi made a notable return to the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night. He presented his latest work, "Parallel Tales," a French-language drama starring Isabelle Huppert. This marks Farhadi's first attendance since his 2021 film, "A Hero," secured the Grand Prix. The film centers on Sylvie, portrayed by Huppert, a writer who spies on her neighbors for novelistic inspiration. Her life and work are unexpectedly disrupted when she hires a young assistant, Adam, leading to a blurring of fiction and reality.
"Parallel Tales" features a notable ensemble cast, including French actors Catherine Deneuve, Virginie Efira, and Vincent Cassel. The film is competing for the prestigious Palme d'Or. Farhadi, a two-time Oscar winner, has been living outside Iran since 2023. He has publicly stated he will not direct films in his native country until the mandatory hijab rules for actresses are lifted.
