Family Ties' Forgotten Spin-Off Surfaces
19 May
Summary
- A forgotten spin-off aired in 1988.
- It shared a universe with Family Ties.
- It featured none of the main Keaton family members.

In 1988, NBC ventured into the "Family Ties" universe with a spin-off titled "Day by Day." This series, however, diverged significantly by not including any members of the iconic Keaton family.
Instead, "Day by Day" centered on Brian Harper, portrayed by Douglas Sheehan. Harper was retroactively established as Steven Keaton's former college roommate, a tenuous link designed to leverage the flagship show's popularity. The plot followed Brian and his wife, Kate, as they transitioned from their professional careers to open a home-based daycare center.
The ensemble cast included notable actors like Courtney Thorne-Smith as their nanny and Christopher Daniel Barnes as their teenage son. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who later starred in "Seinfeld," also appeared as the family's sarcastic neighbor. This spin-off represented a notable attempt to expand the "Family Ties" brand.
