Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer Collapses Mid-Tour

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris suffered a critical cardiac emergency on Thursday, August 6, while at Chase Center in San Francisco. Doctors immediately transported the 58-year-old musician to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The incident led to the cancellation of the band's scheduled concert with Lionel Richie just hours before it was set to begin. This prompted friends and family to launch a GoFundMe campaign three days later, on August 9, to aid Paris and his wife, Kathy Merrick, during his recovery.

As of Wednesday, August 12, the fundraiser had surpassed $60,000 towards its $75,000 goal. Merrick, a singer herself, and their daughter Kyla have been at his bedside. The couple resides in the Los Angeles area, and the ongoing treatment in the Bay Area has led to significant travel and lodging expenses.

Mashelle Clark White, a founding member of Honey Cone and wife of Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White, organized the fundraiser. Honey Cone has canceled upcoming performances to allow Merrick to support her husband of over 30 years. The GoFundMe description highlighted Paris's decades-long contribution to the band's performances.

Paris, who joined Earth, Wind & Fire in 2001, has been a key part of the band for 25 years, contributing to four studio albums. He has also collaborated with numerous notable artists throughout his career. The band has resumed its tour, with percussionist Sonny Emory stepping in for Paris.
