21 Jul
Summary
- ARTEF's Main Character initiative seeks unproduced European feature fiction screenplays.
- The search prioritizes diverse perspectives currently underrepresented on screen.
- Selected projects will be announced at the 2027 Göteborg Film Festival.

A new initiative, Main Character, has been launched by ARTEF to discover unproduced feature fiction screenplays across Europe. This program actively seeks to highlight European perspectives that are currently underrepresented in cinema. Organizations like EAVE and WIFT Sweden have already joined the effort.
The initiative is open to all genres and writers, provided they have a completed feature-length screenplay draft. The selection process emphasizes anonymity to ensure merit-based evaluation and provide equal opportunities. This approach aims to connect emerging stories with industry professionals and new audiences.
Developed from ARTEF's 2026 report, "A New Europe Must Emerge," Main Character officially began at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The first round of submissions closes on September 21, 2026. Twelve selected projects will be revealed at the 2027 Göteborg International Film Festival, accompanied by an analysis of the submissions' themes.
