Europe's Broadcasters Renew Major Series Pact
28 Jan
Summary
- Major European broadcasters have renewed a three-year collaboration.
- The New8 partnership has already commissioned 24 original series.
- This initiative aims to boost European co-productions and talent.

The New8 collaboration, uniting eight major European broadcasters, has been extended for an additional three years. This initiative, established in late 2023, focuses on commissioning, producing, and distributing original series. It represents a significant market of 142 million people, aiming to strengthen European co-productions and elevate local talent globally.
Thus far, New8 has commissioned 24 original series, with more greenlit annually. This renewal underscores the growing success of the partnership in fostering creative content and supporting European talent. Broadcasters like ZDF and VRT emphasize that the collaboration provides essential development time and a platform for creatives amidst a challenging financing landscape for global streamers.
Participating broadcasters include SVT, DR, YLE, RÚV, NRK, VRT, NPO, and ZDF. They collectively provide editorial input throughout production, with a designated local commissioner acting as the primary contact. A new content meeting round has been introduced to foster deeper understanding and collaboration on upcoming projects, allowing members to share insights and provide constructive feedback.
Representatives highlighted that while global streamers are reducing local commissions, New8, as public broadcasters, remains committed to serving local audiences with relevant content. The focus is on series with broad appeal, cultural relevance, and bold, entertaining narratives that possess "European potential" for wider distribution.
