Euphoria's Sound: Labrinth's Exit Leaves Fans Wanting More

Season three of HBO's "Euphoria" is facing significant fan backlash over the notable absence of its original composer, Labrinth. Viewers on social media have expressed that the show feels like a "different show" without the distinctive musical score that was integral to its moody and dramatic atmosphere in its first two seasons. Many feel the music provided essential emotional weight to scenes, a quality they perceive as lacking in the current season.

Labrinth, who won an Emmy for his work on season one, announced his departure earlier this year. He cited a feeling that the "family and the fluidity started to deteriorate" and that the "creative camaraderie started to dissipate." This led him to conclude his involvement with the show was over. While he stated he was "cool" with HBO, his exit left a substantial musical void.

Acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer stepped in to score the new season. However, despite Zimmer's considerable reputation, the shift in musical style has been jarring for many long-time viewers. Music supervisor Kier Lehman emphasizes the importance of a consistent sonic identity in television series, noting that abrupt changes can be disorienting for an audience invested in a show's established tone.

Fans have been vocal, particularly after episodes aired, pointing out scenes where Labrinth's absence was keenly felt. Critiques highlight specific music choices, with one instance of a whimsical marimba beat accompanying a wedding scene being compared to "Under the Sea." The perceived loss of emotional depth and the unique atmosphere Labrinth's music provided has led many to lament his departure and call for his return.
