Veteran television writer Eric Overmyer passed away on Monday, March 16, following an illness. He was 74 years old. Overmyer's career left an indelible mark on television, particularly within the police procedural genre and its more complex iterations.
He was instrumental in shows such as 'Homicide: Life on the Street' and 'The Wire,' and collaborated with David Simon to co-create 'Treme.' Overmyer also developed 'Bosch' for Prime Video, adapting Michael Connelly's novels. This series became Prime Video's longest-running show and led to several spin-offs, including 'Bosch: Legacy.'
Born in 1951, Overmyer began his television career on 'St. Elsewhere.' His work on 'Homicide' led to a lifelong collaboration with David Simon. 'Bosch' premiered in 2014 and was followed by 'Ballard' in 2025 and the upcoming 'Bosch: Start of Watch.'
Colleagues remembered Overmyer fondly. 'We are all going to miss him,' said 'Law & Order' creator Dick Wolf. Michael Connelly noted, 'It wouldn't have happened without Eric. Now he's gone but the stories he told will live on.'
